Laredo adds 19 CNG buses to El Metro for cleaner transit

June 16, 2025. El Metro Transit System acquired 19 additional compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, expanding its fleet to improve transportation services for residents across the Gateway City.

With the new buses ready for service, the city of Laredo is inviting residents to try out the newly acquired vehicles. “You’re invited to ride,” the city of Laredo said in a statement.

According to the city, the acquisition of the new buses aims to modernize transit services and improve the experience for riders across Laredo.

“These new buses represent more than just new vehicles — they represent our continued commitment to providing a cleaner, more efficient and more accessible transit system for all Laredoans,” said El Metro Transit Director RJ Garza.

The director said the expansion is “a critical step toward sustainability and service excellence.”

The new buses include key features such as:

  • Use of clean-burning fuel to reduce harmful emissions.
  • Improved rider experience with modern seating and enhanced climate control.
  • Device charging options, including USB and low-voltage DC ports.
  • A modern Fast Fare payment system with contactless and mobile payment options.

“This expansion is part of a broader initiative by the city of Laredo and El Metro to enhance mobility, increase efficiency and promote sustainability through innovation and infrastructure upgrades,” the city of Laredo added.
