New transit buses planned to support Grand Valley Transit service

March 22, 2026. Grand Valley Transit will add three new buses to its fleet after Mesa County Commissioners approved the purchase on March 10.

The order includes one 29-foot compressed natural gas (CNG) low-floor bus and two 40-foot CNG low-floor buses. The total purchase cost is $2,336,181.

Two of the buses will replace older vehicles that have reached the end of their useful service life. The third bus will expand the fleet, helping maintain reliable service and allowing additional flexibility for maintenance and future route improvements.

The low-floor buses are designed to improve accessibility for riders. Each bus can carry up to 56 passengers and includes two wheelchair positions.

Most of the purchase is funded through federal and state transportation grants secured by Mesa County’s Regional Transportation Planning Office. Local funding for the remaining match comes from the Grand Valley Regional Transportation Committee, which supports regional transit operations.

Compressed natural gas buses cost slightly more upfront than diesel buses, but lower fuel costs help offset the difference over time.

The new buses will help Grand Valley Transit maintain safe, reliable service as the region continues to grow.
