January 4, 2022. Waga Energy signed a contract with Steuben County, New York, to build a WAGABOX® unit on Bath’s landfill. The unit will be commissioned by March 2023. It will purify 1,000 scfm (1,600 m3/h) of landfill gas to deliver 207,000 mmBtu (60 GWh) of renewable natural gas (equivalent to supplying around 4,000 households) while saving 13,500 metric tons of CO2eq each year.
Waga Energy will fund, build, operate and maintain the WAGABOX® unit under a 20-year landfill gas supply contract with Steuben County.
Steuben County is home to approximately 100,000 residents. Its solid waste landfill in Bath is authorized to dispose of 150,000 metric tons of waste per year. In July 2020, the County issued a competitive RFP (request for proposals) for a landfill gas utilization project to upgrade the gas which is currently collected and flared.
It is the first WAGABOX® project in the United States and the third in North-America. Two WAGABOX® units are currently under construction in Cowansville and Saint-Étienne-des-Grès (Québec, Canada).
