RNG Coalition marks 15 years of leadership, 600 operational facilities

July 3, 2026. RNG Coalition celebrates twin achievements: 15 years of service as the nonprofit trade group representing the North American renewable natural gas (RNG) industry, and the commissioning of more than 600 operational facilities across the continent.

The North American RNG portfolio now stands at 604 operational facilities, after the industry surpassed 300 facilities in 2023, 400 in 2024, and 500 last year.

This tremendous growth rate was difficult to foresee when RNG Coalition and the idea of “Renewable Natural Gas” was established on this date 15 years ago, following committed input from a visionary band of early industry members. Just 31 RNG facilities were operational at the time, necessitating the Coalition’s involvement in a number of key policy programs at the federal, state, and provincial levels to help incentivize growth of RNG, a low-carbon, drop-in replacement for fossil gas. With numerous federal, state and provincial, legislative, regulatory and legal successes over the last decade and a half, the Coalition and its members continue to navigate macroeconomic challenges, to advance its mission, to protect and expand existing RNG markets and to create new and diverse market demand for RNG.

“This anniversary belongs to our members,” Johannes Escudero, Founder and CEO of RNG Coalition, said. “From the forward-thinking few who founded this Coalition to the hundreds of companies advancing RNG today, every operational facility represents someone who bet on a more sustainable energy future and delivered.”

“As we set our sights on 1,000 facilities by 2030, I could not be prouder of what this industry has built, or more confident in where it is headed.”

Looking to the future, RNG Coalition is firmly on track for our next goal: 1,000 operational facilities by 2030, as targeted by its Sustainable Methane Abatement and Recovery Timeline (SMART). In addition to the 604 facilities currently capturing methane and producing low-carbon RNG across North America, another 162 projects are currently under construction, with 294 projects in planning phases. That brings the total slate of operating and in-progress sites to 1,060 — well within reach of our 2030 benchmark.
