June 15, 2026. Comanche Renewables is a renewable natural gas (RNG) facility that captures methane produced by household waste at the City of Lawton Landfill and converts it into a usable energy resource. As organic materials such as food waste, paper products and yard debris naturally decompose, they generate methane gas. The facility collects and processes that gas, allowing it to be beneficially reused rather than released into the atmosphere.
The project, originally presented to the Lawton City Council in January 2022, is the result of a partnership between the City of Lawton, Comanche Renewables, NextEra Energy Resources and Sparq Renewables.
During the tour, representatives provided an overview of the facility’s operations and explained how landfill gas is collected through a network of wells and transported to the processing facility. Attendees learned about the technology used to refine the gas and the role the facility plays in supporting modern landfill management practices.
The visit provided City staff with an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the processes taking place alongside landfill operations and the infrastructure that supports them. As the facility continues operations, it serves as an example of how resources generated through everyday municipal services can be captured and repurposed through innovative technology.
The City of Lawton remains committed to keeping residents informed about projects and partnerships that contribute to the community’s long-term sustainability and responsible resource management.
