Indiana offers millions for clean air projects

April 5, 2019. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management plans to award nearly $10 million this year for clean-air projects from funds the state will receive from Volkswagen’s settlement of Clean Air Act violations regarding diesel emissions from its vehicles.

Grant money will be awarded to projects that significantly reduce diesel emissions across Indiana, the organizations said in a joint announcement on April 2.

Example projects include replacing older, higher-emissions diesel garbage trucks with newer, cleaner, compressed natural gas (CNG) powered vehicles or replacing old diesel school buses with new clean-diesel, alternative fuel or electric buses.

This is the first round of funding. Indiana will receive approximately $41 million in all under the terms of the consent decree.
